Guto Pryderi Puw en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guto_Puw
Guto Pryderi Puw is one of the youngest of a group of composers based in North Wales, who have made an important impact on Welsh music in recent years. He studied music at the University of Wales Bangor with composers John Pickard, Andrew Lewis and Pwyll ap Siôn, gained his M.Mus degree in 1996 and after receiving the Parry Williams Scholarship completing his PhD in 2002. In 2006 he was appointed as a full time member of staff at the School of Music, Bangor University, concentrating mainly on composition and contemporary music, and he is the Artistic Director of the Bangor New Music Festival since its founding in 2000.

Although his music is primarily influenced by the European avant-garde and more recently by such composers as Per Nørgård and György Ligeti, the subject matter of his compositions is firmly rooted in Welsh literature and culture.

He won the Composer's Medal at the National Eisteddfod both in 1995 and 1997, and his works have been broadcast on radio and TV and featured in music festivals around the country. In February 2006 he was appointed as the first Resident Composer with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales to compose three new orchestral commissions, with ‘…onyt agoraf y drws…’ (‘unless I open the door’) being premiered at the BBC Proms in 2007 (later to be awarded as the best premiere of the season by BBC Music Magazine) and his Concerto for Oboe winning the BBC Radio 3 Listeners’ Award at the British Composer Awards later in the same year. In 2009 he won the prestigious Creative Wales Award from the Arts Council of Wales to concentrate on developing his music-theatre and operatic writing.

His vocal works are published by Orianna Publications (www.orianapublications.co.uk/puw.htm)

Mae Guto Pryderi Puw ymhlith nifer ddetholedig o gyfansoddwyr o ogledd Cymru sy’n ddiweddar wedi gwneud argraff o bwys ar gerddoriaeth Cymru. Astudiodd gerddoriaeth ym Mhrifysgol Bangor gyda’r cyfansoddwyr John Pickard, Andrew Lewis a Pwyll ap Siôn, lle enillodd ei radd MMus ym 1996 ac, ar ôl ennill Ysgoloriaeth Parry Williams, cafodd PhD mewn cyfansoddi yn 2002. Yn 2006 fe’i penodwyd fel aelod staff llawn amser yr Ysgol Cerddoriaeth, Prifysgol Bangor gan ganolbwyntio yn bennaf ar gyfansoddi a cherddoriaeth gyfoes, ac ef yw Cyfarwyddwr Artistig Gwyl Gerdd Newydd Bangor ers ei sefydlu yn 2000.

Er fod ei gerddoriaeth wedi ei ddylanwadu’n bennaf gan yr avant-garde Ewropeaidd ac yn ddiweddarach gan gyfansoddwyr megis Per Nørgård a György Ligeti, mae testun ei gyfansoddiadau wedi eu gwreiddio’n ddwfn yn niwylliant a llenyddiaeth Gymreig.

Enillodd Dlws y Cerddor yn yr Eisteddfod Genedlaethol yn 1995 ac 1997, a derbyniodd ei weithiau ddarllediadau ar radio a theledu yn ogystal â pherfformiadau cyson mewn gwyliau cerdd ledled y wlad. Yn Chwefror 2006 fe’i penodwyd yn Gyfansoddwr Preswyl gyda Cherddorfa Genedlaethol Gymreig y BBC i ysgrifennu tri gwaith cerddorfaol. Enillodd y cyntaf o’r comisiynau hyn, y Concerto ar gyfer Obo, ‘Wobr y Gwrandawyr’ yng Ngwobrau Cyfansoddwr Prydeinig yn Rhagfyr 2007. Perfformiwyd yr ail gomisiwn ‘…onyt agoraf y drws…’ yn ystod y Proms yn 2007 (gan dderbyn gwobr ‘premiere gorau y tymor’ gan Gylchgrawn Cerddoriaeth y BBC). Yn 2009 derbyniodd wobr Cymru Greadigol gan Gyngor Celfyddydau Cymru er mwyn datblygu ei ysgrifennu operatig a theatr-gerdd.

Cyhoeddir ei gyfansoddiadau lleisiol gan Orianna Publications (www.orianapublications.co.uk/puw.htm).
