| from the Editor Dear Friends, What used to be a trip to the local library to track down a book on something I needed to know more about, has now become a trip upstairs to my computer to consult Google. Google it seems has everything, maps, histories, anything you could possibly want for sale, and a good many you wouldn't. Now I have found a new source of endless provision at the touch of a button - performances of music on Youtube. Real treasures, remote in time as well as space: Andres Segovia playing his guitar by the pool in the Alhambra, simple, timeless and perfect. At the other end of the scale, you can visit beginner's lessons in playing the guitar, or any instrument, with a better view of the teacher's fingers than possibly you would get in a lesson, certainly in a class. Definitions, prescriptions, any kind of how-to-do-it, can be downloaded for future reference. To those of us long familiar with Youtube, all this may seem no longer amazing, but part of everyday provision. Such features are used on a daily basis in our classrooms, after all, and any speaker, anywhere, would these days be expected to use a powerpoint presentation. The music profession is coming to rely more and more on digital technology. It's all bright and shining and stimulating, and we have a right to it - don't we? Perhaps we ought also to remember the dark minus side. What happens when the money fails, globally, or when our civilisation is brought crashing down by a natural catastrophe? The answers are difficult, but surely they must be there. Enid Luff | oddiwrth y Golygydd Annwyl gyfeillion, Bum yn arfer, ers talwm, mynd am dro fach i'r llyfrgell leol, i chwilio am lyfr ar ryw bwnc neu'i gilydd. 'Nawr, af am drip i fyny'r grisiau at y cyfrifiadur, i ymweld â Google. Mae popeth gan Google, mapiau, hanes, unrhyw beth a fyddech yn dymuno ei brynu – a chryn dipyn na fyddech. Ond nawr, 'rwyf wedi darganfod cyflenwad arall di-bendraw – a dim ond rhaid pwyso botwm - sef cerddoriaeth fyw ar Youtube. Mae trysorau gwirioneddol yma, rhai ohonynt yn dod o bell (ac o bell yn ôl), er enghraifft Andres Segovia yn chwarae ei gitar wrth y llyn yn yr Alhambra, mor syml, mor ddigyffro, ac mor berffaith. Ar yr ochr arall, gellir ymweld â “gwersi cyntaf” offerynol ar y gitar, neu unrhyw offeryn arall, a chewch weld bysedd yr athro llawer yn haws nag mewn unrhyw wers gonfensiynol, neu mewn dosbarth. Cewch lawr-lwytho a chadw disgrifiadau, argymhellion, neu unrhyw fath ar gyfarwyddyd. Enid Luff |
| the new website . . . Designing a website for a group of creative types - I have to say it was a bit of a challenge, especially since a number of them already had their own very professional looking sites. OK, as long as I don't try to be too clever and just keep it simple. Anyway, Andrew Wilson-Dickson's chief requirement when commissioning me was that the site should allow members to input their own material. First of all, I decided the look should avoid any cheesy musical images - you know the sort of thing, treble and bass clefs, etc. But I just couldn't resist noticing the f in "cyfansoddwyr" and the p in "composers" - sorry! And... are those lines under the logo actually a stave? Well that's up to you... Another consideration was how to present the material bilingually. It basically comes down to either putting the two languages side by side or creating separate pages. Although it could be argued that separate pages are easier for the reader, I wanted the member pages to run seamlessly into the rest of the site with the option of them being bilingual or not, according to individual choice, so I decided on putting the languages side by side. You will be aware, however, that the internal members' area is available monolingually in either English or Welsh. It is this internal members' area which is at the core of the site. This is where you upload your personal information as well as posting details of events and interesting developments. I hope that I have succeed in making it reasonably clear and simple. The thing to remember when creating a CMS (Content Management System) is not to assume that what's obvious to you is obvious to your users! Judging from the limited number of complaints (so far), I hope I can be reasonably satisfied. I have also created other entry points for the membership administrator and the newsletter editor. It's satisfying to see more and more members uploading their information. Please don't forget you can also upload details of your concerts, events, latest releases, etc. And if you have your own website, or if you are involved in other websites, please try and put links to the Composers of Wales site whenever you can - let's drive as much traffic here as possible for the benefit of all! Tim Pearce | y wefan newydd. . . Creu gwefan i gymuned greadigol - afraid dweud bod hyn yn dipyn o her, yn enwedig o gofio bod gan sawl aelod o'r gymuned honno eu gwefannau eu hunain a'r rheiny'n broffesiynol iawn eu golwg. Os felly, rhaid oedd peidio â bod yn rhy glyfar a chadw diwyg y peth yn syml. Beth bynnag, prif ofyniad Andrew Wilson-Dickson oedd bod y safle yn caniatáu i'r aelodau fewnbynnu eu deunydd eu hunain. Felly dyma fynd ati yn gyntaf, o ran edrychiad, i geisio osgoi delweddau cerddorol ystrydebol, megis allweddi'r trebl neu'r bas... Ond wedyn, ffaelu peidio â sylwi ar yr f a'r p yn "cyfansoddwyr" a "composers" - flin iawn 'da fi am 'ny! Ac ai erwydden yw'r llinellau o dan y logo? Chi biau'r dewis... Ystyriaeth arall oedd sut i gyflwyno dwyieithrwydd. Yn y bôn, p'un ai gosod yr ieithoedd ochr un ochr ynteu creu tudalennau ar wahân. Ar gyfer y tudalennau cyhoeddus, dewisais i'r cyntaf - gellid dadlau bod tudalennau ar wahân yn haws i'r darllenydd, ond roeddwn i am i dudalennau'r aelodau ymdoddi'n hawdd i weddill y wefan, pa un a ddewisai'r aelodau gyflwyno eu gwybodaeth yn ddwyieithog neu beidio. Sylwch, fodd bynnag, fod tudalennau mewnol yr aelodau naill ai yn Gymraeg neu'n Saesneg. A dyma ni'n dod at gnewyllyn y safle: maes yr aelodau. Dyma lle rydych yn gallu lan-lwytho eich gwybodaeth bersonol yn ogystal â phostio manylion am ddigwyddiadau a datblygiadau. Gobeithiaf fy mod i wedi llwyddo i'w wneud yn weddol glir a syml. Y her wrth greu'r fath CMS (neu Content Management System) yw peidio â chymryd bod rhywbeth o reidrwydd yn amlwg i'r defnyddiwr os yw'n amlwg i chi! Â barnu wrth y nifer cyfyngedig o gwynion (hyd yma), mae gennyf le i fod yn weddol fodlon. Rwyf wedi creu mynedfeydd eraill ar gyfer gweinydd yr aelodaeth â golygydd y cylchlythyr, hefyd. Da yw gweld mwy a mwy o aelodau yn lan-lwytho eu gwybodaeth. Ond peidiwch ag anghofio y gallwch lan-lwytho manylion eich cyngherddau neu cyhoeddiadau diweddaraf. Ac os oes gennych eich gwefan eich hunain, neu os ydych yn ymwneud â gwefannau eraill, achubwch y cyfle i osod dolen i wefan Cyfansoddwyr Cymru pryd bynnag y gallwch - rhaid gyrru y mwyaf posibl o draffig atom er budd pawb! | Composers of Wales concert Composers of Wales concert Modulating the Voice A concert of new Welsh music given by Sylvia Strand (soprano), with Andrew Wilson Dickson (piano) on Saturday 28th November at 3pm, in Canton Uniting Church, Cardiff. The concert was promoted by Composers of Wales under the title Modulating the Voice. This programme was based on the new songs workshopped by Sylvia and Andrew at the Members' Day at Gelli on July 11th (there was an account of this event in Newsletter 33). The rest of the programme included new songs by our members. The evening was also a celebration of Mervyn Burtch's 80th birthday, and three specially composed tributes to him were played as part of the programme (these are marked with an asterisk): Here is the programme: Dafydd Bullock - In der Frühe (Theodor Storm) Enid Luff - The Linnet (Robert Bridges) Lee Hicks - Fall Softly Through Lisa Mears - Pie Jesu Rosemary Thorpe - The Yellow Knight (Rosemary Garton) If you Came (Ruth Pitter) Elaine Hugh-Jones - Two Night Songs: The Starlight Night (Gerard Manley Hopkins) The Nightingale near the House (Harold Monro) Gareth Churchill - My first Love was a Plover (Twm Morys) Timothy Raymond - The White Horse* (D. H. Lawrence) Peter Reynolds - Three Wang Wei Poems* We play our Flutes Autumn Hills I sit alone Enid Luff – for Mervyn* (solo Piano) Andrew Wilson-Dickson – Trois Chansons Breves (Djallaludin Rumi) Ton Amour Ô jour, leve-toi Une Bien-aimée Mervyn Burtch - A Tapestry of Flowers (Francesca Kay) Winter Wildlife First Frost Do it with Anger Roots Primrose White Flowers At last Michael Robinson - Four Sonnets Spring (Gerard Manley Hopkins) Let me not to the Marriage (Shakespeare) Thou hast made me (John Donne) Clouds (Rupert Brooke) The songs were beautifully sung and played, and it is difficult to say anything about this event except that it was delightful. This impression was reinforced by the beverages and delicious cakes served afterwards!
